Come to the Table During National Family Week, November 18-24.

A number of studies in the last few years have heralded the benefits of families sitting down to eat together. Amidst busy schedules and technology that allows for us to be constantly "plugged-in", coming together to share a meal, talk, and create and maintain traditions has very real benefits.

Children in families that eat together
    • Do better in school
    • Get along with other children better
    • Say they enjoy eating together
    • Eat more nutritious food
    • Learn manners and traditions
Plus, family meals cooked at home save money and are a time to practice faith and spiritual beliefs. It can be hard to find time to talk and eat together but it's not as difficult as you think. Here are some tips fro overcoming those perceived obstacles.

    Busy schedules
    • Start small. Try on or two times per week.
    • Plan ahead.
    • Try weekends or breakfast, not just dinner.
    • Family meals can happen even if someone has to miss occasionally.
    No time to cook
    • Meals don't have to be hot or fancy.
    • Team up to share cooking (and fun) with the kids.
    • Concentrate on one or two parts of the meal, and use time-saving, prepackaged foods like frozen vegetables and pre-choped lettuce to round out the rest.
Other people don't want to eat together
    • Talk with them about the benefits of sharing a meal together.
    • Invite a friend or older adult to join you.
    • Keep the conversation light and ask about people's day.
    TV and phone calls
    • Make a no-TV, no-computer rule for meals.
    • Don't take calls and leave the "hand-held" in another room.
    Don't know how to cook
    • Start simple.
    • Invest in a good cookbook that specializes in easy recipes with limited ingredients.
    • Use the internet - numerous recipe Web sites exist.
    Children's behavior makes mealtimes unpleasant
    • Make a list of things to talk about.
    • Encourage, but don't force children to eat.
    • Plan for your child's age.
    End your meal together
      Cleaning up
      Going for a walk
      Going to the YMCA
